What fetch lands do
Fetch lands are lands that enter untapped, can be sacrificed to pay 1 life, and let you search your library for a land of one of the two basic land types they name. They fix your mana while thinning your deck and providing free shuffle effects, which synergize with cards like Brainstorm, Sensei’s Divining Top, and landfall abilities. Every competitive format that allows them plays a full set of the relevant fetches.
Onslaught vs Zendikar fetches
The original Onslaught cycle (2002) provided the five allied-color fetch lands; enemy-color fetches arrived in Zendikar (2009). All ten have since appeared in reprint sets like Modern Horizons 2, Zendikar Expeditions, and Secret Lair, which added foil and alternate-art versions. Because they are not on the Reserved List, mass reprints have kept fetch land prices far below those of original dual lands despite persistent demand.
Fetches vs duals
Fetch lands and the original dual lands work together: fetches can find dual lands because duals share the basic land types (e.g., an Underground Sea is both a Swamp and an Island, so a Polluted Delta can fetch it). While dual lands are irreplaceable in Legacy, fetch lands are more widely used across formats, and their reprintability makes them more affordable. For pricing on duals, see our Dual Lands page.
