What counts as a dual land
The original dual lands were printed in Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, and Revised between 1993 and 1994. Each produces two colors of mana with no drawback and counts as both basic land types (e.g., Tundra is both a Plains and an Island). These ten cards are the only true “dual lands” on the Reserved List; later lands that enter untapped require a condition (shock, fetch, etc.).
Why dual lands are expensive
Dual lands are on the Reserved List, meaning Wizards of the Coast has promised never to reprint them in functionally identical form. They are staples in Legacy and Commander — the strongest untapped mana for older formats. The last printing was Revised in 1994, so supply has never grown while demand from competitive and casual players continues, driving prices steadily higher.
Budget alternatives
If dual lands are out of reach, consider shock lands (e.g., Hallowed Fountain, Watery Grave) and fetch lands (e.g., Flooded Strand, Polluted Delta). Shock lands cost life to enter untapped, while fetch lands search for lands from your deck. Both offer excellent color fixing at a fraction of the cost and are widely used in Modern and Commander.
