Sylvan Safekeeper is a one-mana 1/1 Human Wizard from Judgment (2002) that lets you sacrifice a land to give a creature you control shroud until end of turn — one of the cheapest and hardest-to-stop protection effects ever printed.

Because the ability costs no mana and can be activated repeatedly as long as you have lands to feed it, Safekeeper turned into a quiet Commander staple: a one-drop that makes targeted removal against your best creature a losing proposition.

What Sylvan Safekeeper actually does

The text is short: sacrifice a land, and a target creature you control gains shroud until end of turn. Shroud means the creature can't be the target of any spells or abilities — yours included, which is the one real drawback. You can't equip, enchant, or pump a shrouded creature for the rest of the turn.

The strength is in the activation cost. It requires zero mana, so you can hold everything open and still protect your commander the moment someone points a removal spell at it. And because sacrificing the land is a cost, there's no clean way to interact with it — by the time an opponent responds, the shroud activation is already on the stack.

The Invitational card that took years to print

Sylvan Safekeeper carries a nice piece of Magic history: it was the prize card for Olle Råde, winner of the very first Magic Invitational. Winners of the Invitational got to design a card, and the artwork traditionally depicted the player — the wizard in the Judgment art is Råde himself.

The card took a long and winding path from Råde's original design to a printable version, which is why a mid-1990s Invitational win produced a card that didn't appear until Judgment in 2002. It sits alongside other Invitational cards like Meddling Mage and Shadowmage Infiltrator as a small, collectible slice of the game's competitive lore.

Why Commander players run it

Safekeeper shows up anywhere a single creature carries the game plan. Voltron decks use it to protect an equipped or enchanted commander from spot removal; sacrifice the land after the equipment is attached and the turn's work is done. It's also a natural fit in lands-matter decks, where sacrificing a land is closer to an upside than a cost.

Pairings that make the sacrifice painless include Crucible of Worlds and Ramunap Excavator, which replay the sacrificed land every turn, and Titania, Protector of Argoth, which turns each activation into a 5/3 Elemental. In those shells, Safekeeper is protection and a value engine at the same time.

  • Zero-mana activation: protect a creature even when fully tapped out
  • Repeatable: every land you control is another activation
  • Best homes: voltron, lands-matter, and sacrifice-themed decks
  • The catch: shroud blocks your own targeting too, so sequence pumps and equips first

Printings and what collectors pay attention to

The original Judgment printing is a rare from a small 2002 set, and Judgment foils are notoriously scarce — foil Safekeepers have long been one of the set's chase pulls. More than a decade after the original, a judge promo foil finally gave players a premium alternative, and it remains the version tournament regulars and cube owners tend to hunt.

Nonfoil Judgment copies are typically the affordable entry point, while foils of either printing carry a real premium. Check the live pricing on this page for where each version sits today.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Sylvan Safekeeper grant shroud instead of hexproof?
The card predates hexproof, which wasn't keyworded until 2011. Shroud was the protection technology of the era, and the downside — you can't target your own creature either — is part of playing the card well.
Can I activate Sylvan Safekeeper in response to a removal spell?
Yes. The ability can be activated at instant speed, so you can wait until an opponent targets your creature, then sacrifice a land to give it shroud. The removal spell will fizzle when its target becomes illegal.
Is Sylvan Safekeeper's ability hard to stop?
Very. It costs no mana, sacrificing the land is part of the cost, and the shroud effect resolves unless someone has a way to counter activated abilities — a narrow class of answers most tables don't run.
Who is depicted in the Sylvan Safekeeper art?
Olle Råde, winner of the first Magic Invitational. Invitational winners designed a card and appeared in its artwork, and Safekeeper was Råde's prize card.
