Sol Ring is a one-mana artifact that taps for two colorless mana, letting its controller jump from one available mana to three on the next turn. It is one of the strongest and most recognizable cards in Magic, a defining staple of Commander, and a collectible with printings ranging from inexpensive precon copies to scarce early and premium versions.
Sol Ring does something Magic normally makes difficult: it produces more mana than it costs, and it keeps doing so every turn. Play it for one mana, tap it immediately for two, and you have already recovered the cost while gaining an extra mana. Untap with it and the advantage compounds.
That efficiency explains both sides of Sol Ring’s identity. Players see a staple that accelerates expensive spells. Collectors see a card with more than three decades of history, many pieces of artwork, old-border copies, promos, premium treatments, and a handful of genuinely scarce versions.
What Sol Ring actually does
Sol Ring costs one generic mana and taps to add two colorless mana. Colorless mana can pay generic costs and costs that specifically require colorless mana, but it cannot by itself pay for a colored mana symbol.
The card does not need a creature-style turn to “wake up.” Artifacts are not affected by summoning sickness, so a Sol Ring can normally tap the turn it enters. That creates the classic opening of land, Sol Ring, followed by another two-mana play.
Sol Ring is acceleration, not fixing. It helps cast artifacts, colorless cards, and spells with large generic portions in their costs, but a hand with Sol Ring and no colored sources can still struggle to cast colored spells.
