Survival of the Fittest is a two-mana green enchantment from Exodus that lets you pay one green mana and discard a creature card to search your library for another creature. It turns every creature in hand into the best creature for the situation, while also placing cards into the graveyard for decks that can use them there.
Survival of the Fittest is not merely a tutor. It is a repeatable conversion engine. A redundant mana creature can become an answer. A large creature stuck in hand can become a combo piece. A creature discarded as a cost may be exactly where the deck wanted it: in the graveyard.
That flexibility made Survival one of the defining cards of creature-toolbox strategies and one of Exodus’s major Reserved List collectibles.
How the ability works
To activate Survival of the Fittest, you pay one green mana and discard a creature card. Discarding is part of the cost. You then search your library for a creature card, reveal it, put it into your hand, and shuffle.
Because the discard is a cost, opponents cannot wait to see what you search for and then counter the discard. They can respond to the activated ability, but the discarded card is already in the graveyard.
The ability can be activated multiple times if you have green mana and creature cards to discard. The creature found by one activation can even be discarded to the next activation, allowing a player to move through a chain of creatures.
Why Survival is more than a tutor
A one-time tutor improves consistency. Survival repeatedly reshapes the player’s hand. That creates several strategic uses:
The deck-building cost is real: Survival wants a high creature count and enough green mana to activate repeatedly. In the right shell, that “cost” becomes the engine’s strength.
- Find a silver-bullet creature for the board state.
- Assemble two or more creature combo pieces.
- Put a reanimation target into the graveyard.
- Turn a situational creature into a stronger draw.
- Stock the graveyard with creatures that have death, flashback-like, or recursion value.
Survival and Recurring Nightmare
Exodus contained several cards that reward graveyard recursion, and Survival naturally pairs with that environment. Recurring Nightmare is the most famous partner: Survival can place a creature into the graveyard and find another creature, while Recurring Nightmare converts creatures on the battlefield and in the graveyard into a repeatable loop of value.
The exact package changes by format and legality, but the core idea remains the same. Survival gives the player control over which creatures are in hand and which are in the graveyard.
Reserved List value
Survival of the Fittest is on the Reserved List. The original tournament-legal card will not receive an ordinary reprint under the current official policy. That limits long-term supply while demand comes from players, collectors, and fans of Exodus-era Magic.
Reserved List status does not guarantee a straight line upward. Prices can fall, formats can change, and demand can shift. It does mean new supply cannot arrive through a normal reprint that is functionally the same card.
Condition is especially important on an old card that was commonly played without modern sleeve habits. Check edge wear, surface scratches, shuffle wear, bends, and inking.
